Zeolite is a purely natural, crystalline hydrated aluminosilicate of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals (Ca, K, Na, Mg). It is, in fact, a kind of natural disinfectant; it is non-toxic, non-allergenic and effectively regulates nutrient management in the soil.
Description: Zeolite is a purely natural, crystalline, hydrated aluminosilicate of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals (Ca, K, Na, Mg). Zeolite is unique in that the spatial arrangement of its atoms creates channels, cavities and pores of constant dimensions, in which substances in solid, liquid and gaseous states are trapped. Zeolite is therefore widely used in ion-exchange processes. Zeolite is a microporous material which retains sodium and chlorine ions within its pores. In an aqueous environment, these ions are capable of ‘absorbing’ other ions, a property we utilise in the filtration process. Zeolite is, in fact, a kind of natural disinfectant; it is non-toxic, non-allergenic and effectively regulates nutrient management in the soil. Uses: Additive for growing media: zeolite makes the substrate well-aerated and suitable for the healthy growth of the plant root system; it binds and subsequently gradually releases all fertilisers used; it improves water management; and its structure provides an ideal environment for the proliferation of beneficial soil bacteria. Furthermore, zeolite is suitable for improving acidic, heavy clayey or sandy soils, where it acts as a soil conditioner.
Decorative material: zeolite is a suitable decorative material for covering the soil surface of plants grown in containers. It prevents excessive water evaporation, binds nutrients and absorbs harmful substances. It prevents the growth of mould. It absorbs odours from the surrounding environment. Planting and sowing: using zeolite as a drainage layer at the bottom of a sowing or growing container ensures plants remain healthy and develop a strong root system.
Filter medium for aquariums, ponds and fish tanks: zeolite helps to create a suitable environment for fish and ornamental aquatic plants, reduces the growth of algae and significantly lowers the level of harmful ammonia in the water. Depending on the size and type of filtration system and the volume of the tank, both the 1–2.5 mm and 4–8 mm fractions can be used.
Hydroponic cultivation: thanks to its unique structure, zeolite is one of the best substrates for hydroponic cultivation. Lawn establishment: zeolite is an invaluable material for establishing, maintaining and regenerating damaged lawns.
